Cpl James A. Rapino attended college for two years and was a plumber before he enlisted in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania on 13 July 1942.

He was promoted to corporal on 10 September 1944.

On 19 September, L Company made an advance towards Bratte, East of the Bois de la Rumont. During this engagement Cpl James A. Rapino led his squad in an assault with fragmentation grenades which destroyed four German mortars and three half-tracks under severe enemy fire. For this action he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously.

During this action he was lightly wounded in action and evacuated to the 110th Evacuation Hospital in Martincourt.
