Pfc Howard F. Lutz attended high school for four years and was a production foreman before he enlisted in New York City, New York, on 31 August 1943.

Pfc Lutz was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in Luxembourg on 26 January 1945. The citations read in part: "At Pintsch, Luxembourg, Pfc Lutz volunteered to replenish his company's supply of ammunition. Despite sever hostile fire he manned a machine gun mounted on a truck loaded with ammunition while the driver traveled over mined roads and through enemy barrages."
