2nd Lt William F. Herpel graduated from Palm Beach High School and attended the University of North Carolina for three years. He was employed by the Stetson University in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States at Camp Blanding, Florida on 24 June 1942 and joined his unit from the 38th Repl. Battalion on 18 September 1944.
