Pfc Gordon W. Ayres attended high school for three years and was a chauffeur, employed by the Swissvale Public School before he enlisted.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States on 6 October 1942 and was sent overseas on 1 July 1944.

In October 1944 he was wounded by artillery shell fragments in his shoulder.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in the thorax.
