S/Sgt Robert C. Cowles attended high school for four years and was a cement rups helper employed by Harshaw Chemicals before he enlisted in Cleveland, Ohio on 9 July 1942.

He was reported wounded in action in September 1944 in France for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
On 9 November he was reported severely wounded in action and evacuated to the 305th Medical Clearing Station. At that moment F Company was holding positions in Aulnois-sur-Seille.
He died of head and chest wounds caused by artillery shell fragments.
