1st Lt Eugene D. Moffett volunteered for the U.S. Army in Morrison Field, West Palm Beach, Florida on 23 March 1942.

Statement from 1st Lt Arthur B. Schottman:
"The left engine of the plane was hit by flak on the bomb run, the plane nosed up and drifted off to the right of formation. Plane was out of control when last sighted. One chute was seen to leave the ship. Plane would have landed on West edge of Paris, France. There was no reported observation of plane crashing. Moffett bailed out and died of his wounds in a Paris hospital."

Lt Moffett was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Solers, France.
