S/Sgt Cornelius Vander Lugt attended high school for 1 year and was a mechanic. He enlisted in Kalamazoo, Michigan on 5 April 1943. His father was born in Delft, The Netherlands. The parents of his mother were also born in The Netherlands.

On a combat mission over Germany, S/Sgt Cornelius Vander Lugt was hit by flak. As soon as the airplane was over friendly territory, the pilot made an emergency landing. As rapidly as possible, S/Sgt Vander Lugt was taken to an Army Hospital were he was given the needed medical attention. His wounds, however, were to severe and he died the same day.
