More information

2Lt Christopher P. Schommer graduated from St Patrick High School in 1937. He was employed as assistant pay master at Wilson Sporting Goods Company.

He enlisted in Chicago, Illinois on 6 May 1941.

Eye witness statement:
"This aircraft was a member of the lead Group of a Combat Wing. All A/C were on the bomb run flying at 25,000 feet. Weather was clear with no undercast as the bomb was begun. At altitude, cloudes were encountered as the bomb run progressed. Clouds became solid, so the Group began descent and leveled off, flying at 23,000 feet, the Group was attacked by a close formation of about 40-70 S/E enemy A/C which were practically directly on top of our formation. Two passes were made on this Group, both being head-on in close formation ad well pressed. About 80 enemy A/C were in the formation making the second attack. This aircraft dropped out of formation and it is believed that it was one of four aircraft observed about 20 miles NNE of Berlin losing altitude rapidly. Two parachutes were seen. No other information available. It was 2nd Lt Schommer's sixth mission. He was first buried at the Parish Cemetery of Friesack on 20 April 1944.
