1st Lt Nicholas Mottola enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 17 June 1942.

Lt Mottola received a battlefield commission after leading a platoon to secure a 20-mile invasion corridor near Vechel, the Netherlands, which was strategically important.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
