Pvt Earl R. Philbrick attended the Sidney public schools and was graduated from Cony High School. While in high school he was employed at the North Augusta Dairy, formerly owned by his uncle Roland Philbrick.He enlisted at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 8 May 1944 and received his basic training at Camp Blanding, Florida.
He was a member of a patrol with the mission of crossing the Roer river during Operation Queen and laying an ambush along a trail. They loaded into an assault boat at Flossdorf, Germany, but part way across the boat overturned.
