More information

Ralph N. Ramsey graduated from Roanoke College with the class of 1942 and was employed as a soil conservation supervisor by the Department of Agriculture.

He enlisted on 10 September 1942 in Nashville, Tennessee.
He held a private pilot's license and was graduated on 28 May from the Army Air Forces advanced flying school at Napier Field in Dothan, Alabama and received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant.

Statement from Roy Easterwood Jr., 2nd Lt:
"I started down through the overcast from 13,000 feet with all of my flight in close formation. I broke out at approximately 1,200 feet indicated. It was raining and visibility was less than 1/4 mile, and the ceiling varied from the ground to about 300 feet. I still had all of my flight except Lt Ralph N. Ramsey, who was flying on my wing. He was seen to lose formation about 1,000 feet before we broke out below the clouds. He never called me to say that he had lost me. This was between 1400 and 1415. Later, as I was being vectored to another base, I thought I recognized his voice calling for a homing, but I did not hear his call sign. At the time he was last seen, my approximate position was just north of Charleroi, Belgium."
