The aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters who came in on a nose attack. It caught fire and was in a mass of flames in a few seconds. It made curves over Sainbach and finally crashed.Five crew members survived and were taken prisoner, five men were killed.
According to a crew member Lt Johnson was killed by enemy 20mm fire while at his station.
He was initially buried at the cemetery Neuburg/Donau, Germany on 29 April 1944.
