Pfc Joseph A. Berry graduated from Shortridge High School class of 1940. During his high school career, he was a member of the math and baton clubs as well as the National Honor Society. When he wasn't on stage acting in a play, he was in the pit performing with the orchestra. His favorite sports were tennis and baseball. Upon graduation, he attended Butler University for two years and pledged to a fraternity. Joe earned a full scholarship to the University of Chicago and studied there for at least one semester prior to enlisting in Indianapolis, Indiana on 6 February 1943.
