Capt Hugh M. Gettys graduated from Presbyterian College in June of 1942 and received his commission as Second Lieutenant ten days later. During his college career, he was cadet commander of the college battalion in addition to vice-president of the student body and captain of the varsity football team. Upon receiving his commission as second lieutenant, He trained at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, and at Fort Benning, Georgia.

While on furlough in May of 1943, he was married to Helen Culver.

His father-in-law, Lt. Col. Charles Culver, was serving in Italy at the time.

Capt Gettys deployed overseas in September of 1944.
