Pfc David A. Read attended Western Reserve Academy where he palyed football, tennis, practiced swimmng and spring board diving. He had a scholarship to Amherst College but had to enlist.He enlisted in Akron, Ohio on 28 June 1943. He was first assigned to Camp Hood for his basic training and then to Tarleton College, Texas for A. S. T. P. instruction. Later he went to Camp Maxey, Texas, from which he was transferred overseas.
He was killed by a German mortar shell,
After the war his remains were deemed unrecoverable by the Army. On 17 April 2001, his remains were found by two Belgians who were part of the MIA Project. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetry on 18 July 2002.
