Sgt Garland W. Monzingo attended Stamford High School and was married to Maurine Walker on 25 March 1938. He was employed by the Johnson Motor Lines.He enlisted in Lubbock, Texas on 13 September 1943 and was an instructor at Las Vegas Air Base before he was sent overseas.
The flak was intense at the time the aircraft was hit. The aircraft appeared to be hit in #3 engine, and between the bomb bay and the wing. The nose section was blown off and the whole right side of the aircraft was on fire. The aircraft appeared to be under control to below 15,000 feet and then was observed to explode. Two parachutes were seen.
The entire crew of nine men was killed.
