Sgt Wampler attended Duquesne University when he joined the U.S. Army Reserve in August 1942.

He completed 21 missions.

The airplane was hit by flak after bombs away and started to go down. Ten chutes were seen coming out of the ship. The Germans shot him on the way to the ground.
