2nd Lt Philip Sachs attended college and was a mechanic and repairman of airplanes before he volunteered for the U.S. Army at Camp Upton, New York on 14 April 1942.

Statement from S/Sgt William H. Lawrence:
"A/C hit by flak and went into spin, no smoke or flames visible. A/C last seen still in spin going into clouds at 8000. Six parachutes came out and were seen to open. Approximate location, 10 miles west of Weissenburg, Germany."

Lt Sachs was shot by SS troops after capture.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Limey, France.
