More information
Statement from 1st Lt Francis J. O’Connell:"During an encounter with several FW-190s in the vicinity of Magdeburg, I was at about 7,000 ft. heading in a southerly direction heading southeast. On the deck was a P-51 with a FW-190 on his tail. I went down to attack the FW-190, and during the descent, I heard someone on the R/T say, 'Get him off my tail.' About the same time, I saw that the P-51 was streaming white smoke. Meanwhile, I closed on the e/a who chandelled to the left. The P-51 continued to fly straight and level at an altitude of approximately 500 ft., still streaming white smoke. I saw no more of the mustang after I closed on the FW-190 as I broke off to the right and up. The P-51 I mentioned must have been the one flown by F/O Robert J. Black because it was the only Mustang in trouble during our engagement with the e/a and the only one which did not return home."
F/O Robert J. Black is remembered at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Vernon, Oneida County, New York.
