More information

Statement from 2nd Lt Edward R.Regis, who flew in the same mission: "I was flying green 4 on way in to the target when Lt Owen called in a JU 88 closing in on the tail of an aborted B-17, at about one o'clock low. Lt Eagleston put the flight in string and made a partial overhead pass on the JU 88 and went below on his pass. The JU 88 then made a steep turn to the left and down into the overcast with Lt Nall on his tail about 30 yards behind. Lt Eagleston said, 'Do not follow him down.' We broke off, but green 2 followed the JU 88. We reformed and circled twice, but Lt Nall did not appear again."

Statement from 1st Lt Arthur W. Owen, who flew in the same mission: "I was flying green 3 on way in to target when I sighted an aborted B-17 with a JU 88 on its tail closing in at about 100 Yards. They were at one o'clock and 3,000 feet below. Blue flight covered us as green 1 put the flight in string and made a steep diving pass at the JU 88. Green one and two went below on their pass, and I pulled off to the left of the JU 88 and turned into him. He split-S'ed, and green one said, 'Do not follow him down.' Green two was close on the JU 88's tail as it entered the overcast. We reformed, making two large orbits, but Lt. Nall could not be seen."

Statement from 1st Lt G.T. Eagleston, who flew in the same mission: "I was flying green 1 on the raid of January 4th, on route to target. Sighted an abortive B-17 with a JU 88 on its tail about 100 yards behind. I made a semi-overhead attack with flight in string. The JU 88 broke off and headed for the overcast with my 2 man, Lt Nall on its tail. I ordered Lt Nall to break off and reform, but received no acknowledgement, and Lt Nall followed the JU 88 into the overcast. Both ships were in a vertical dive. Reformed flight and proceeded to target area."
