Lester L Smith was born Lester Luther Gross. He was married to Emme Fallstitch in 1934 and had three children and left the family and went to Connecticut where he changed his last name to his married sisters last name of Smith.He was a filling station attendant before he enlisted in New Haven, Connecticut on 10 November 1943.
He was killed by artillery shell fragments to his stomach.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
