T/5 Herman T. Desmond worked as a driver, employed by the E.J. Reed Co. before he enlisted in Rochester, New York on 27 April 1942. He was sent overseas in February 1943.

At the time of his death by a non-battle related cause, the 191st Tank Battalion was doing occupation tasks in the vicinity of Munich, Bavaria, Germany
