T/5 John F. Willcavage was a messenger noy before he joined the National Guard in Hartford, Connecticut on 3 February 1941.

From May 1944 to June 1944, he was hospitalized in Italy for wounds, sustained when his tank hit a land mine.

On 17 and 18 January 1945 in the vicinity of Reipertwiller, the light tanks of the 191th Tank Battalion were supporting the 157th Infantry Regiment. They had to bring ammunition to the front line . On the icy road one tank slid in a ditch and overturned. T/5 Willcavage's legs were crushed.
