Carl F. Wunderlin graduated from Lancaster High School in 1937. His father died in June 1944 and his mother in 1941.He joined the the Air Corps of the Regular Army at Fort Sheridan, Illinois on 5 December 1941 and was sent overseas in May 1944.
Eyewitnesses of other airplanes, Lt Niederriter, and Lt Fleck, stated that the aircraft was attacked by enemy aircraft after bombs away, dropped the nose gear. Then most of the landing gear came down with the plane leaving formation under control with #3 engine windmilling, #4 engine out, and some flames coming from the ship.
