2nd Lt Joseph V. Barnett graduated from Ada High School and attended East Central College.

He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 30 March 1942. He was sent overseas on 15 November 1943

The airplane was attacked by enemy fighters which resulted in fire under the flight deck and a part of the rudder was shot off. Seven crew members survived and were taken prisoner. Three were killed and were initially buried at the communicy cemetery of Soisdorf in a common grave.

His brother, 1st Lt Somers Edwards Barnett Jr., was killed in action on 19 December 1942 and is buried at North Africa American Cemetery in Carthage, Tunisia.
