2nd Lt. Carl R. Rano attended Massachusetts Agriculture College in Amherst with the class of 1943 after he transferred from the University of Alabama. He majored in Chemistry and belonged to the Newman Club, the Chemistry club and was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity.He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States at Westover Field, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts on 2 May 1942.
The airplane was lost as the result of enemy aircraft attacks and was last seen near the Dutch coast. It is assumed the airplane crashed into the sea, north of Texel. All crew members are still missing in action and are all remembered at the Walls of the Missing at Margraten.
