Lieutenant Bergman volunteered for the Army Air Corps in August of 1942 and served as an Aviation Cadet at Perrin Field, Texas. He then graduated from the Lubbock Army Air Field in May of 1943. Before joining the service, Lieutenant Bergman was employed by the City Fire Department for more than threes years, part of the time as a dispatcher.

The aircraft was shot down by German fighters near the IP on 8 April 1944.
