2nd Lt Carl H. Dasso graduated from Rock Island High School at Rock Island, Illinois and graduated from St. Ambrose College and also took a course in agriculture at the University of Illinois.He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Chicago, Illinois on 25 June 1942. He received training at Baimbridge, Georgia and was commissioned at Moody Field, Georgia.
According to crew members of other airplane in the formation, this B-17 was attacked by German fighters, right after they left the target area. It started sliding to the right, almost hitting the tail of another B-17. Pieces began flying off and a few moments later the left wing came off near #1 engine. It quickly started rolling to the right and going down. Soon after the other wing broke off and the fuselage blew up.
Four crew members survived and were taken prisoner, five men were killed. They wer einitially buried at the cemetery of Tempelfelde on 4 June 1944.
Lt Dasso was on his 24th mission.
His brother, 2nd Lt Eugene E. Dasso, is buried next to him.
Besides his brother Eugene, three other siblings served: Robert was a bombardier, stationed in France, Raymond joined the Navy, Leo served with the Army Air Corps and Lucille was also stationed in France.
