Pvt Raymond O. Barkey graduated from Lowell High School with the class of 1942. He participated in sports and joined the band in his senior year.

He enlisted on 31 March 1943 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was rported wounded in action on 6 June 1944 and returned to duty on 18 June 1944.

Pvt Barkey was reported wounded in action on 6 October 1944 and died in a hospital in The Netherlands later that day.

His brother, T/Sgt Mervin Barkey, was a gunner-engineer on a B-24 bomber and was reported missing in action after a raid over German territory in February 1944. Later he was reported to be a prisoner of war in Germany.

Pvt Barkey initially buried at th Temporary American Military Cemetery of Molenhoek, The Netherlands.
