2nd Lt Richard S. Fleming was attending Yale in 1942 with the Class of 1945) when he withdrew and enlisted at Fort Knox on 11 September 1942. He attended Armored Forces Officer Candidate School, Fort Knox, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant a year later.

He was asked to lead a dismounted reconnaisance to determine the locations of enemy positions accross the Elbe river. He was machine gunned along with two others (one of whom survived).

For this action he was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously.
