Pfc Manning L. Thompson graduated from Altoona High School and was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad before he enlisted in Altoona, Pennsylvania on 13 October 1942.

He had his basic training at Camp Forrest, Tennessee and Camp Phillips, Kansas.
