1st Lt Walter W. Mansolillo attended high school for four years and was a bookkeeper and cashier before he enlisted in Albany, New York on 29 January 1941. He served in the Pacific area for nine months and then returned to the United States to attend Officer's Candidate School in 1942. After graduating from OCS, he was stationed at Fort McClelland, Alabama for a while. In January 1943 he attended the Adjutant General's School in Washington, D.
