More information
1st Lt Charles B. Hux volunteered for the U.S. Army in San Antonio, Texas, on 5 January 1942.Statement from 1st Lt Thomas D. Howell:
"While on a close support armed reconnaissance mission 27 March 1945 in the Frankfurt area, Lt Hux was leader of casket Red section, and we took off at or about 1030 on the 27th of March 1945. At approximately 1130 we were being directed by ripsaw three to the target area. As we were passing over Frankfurt, we began to pick up heavy flak at our altitude, which was approximately 5,000 ft. I was leading the second element behind Lt Hux and, upon observing the flak, I broke to the left and then resumed course. Upon leveling off, I saw Lt Lux’s ship do a half roll and go into a tight spiral. Considerable flame was coming from the supercharger and from the cockpit area. He left the ship at about 2,000 ft, the ship dove into the ground on an airfield northwest of Frankfurt. The parachute appeared to be only partially open when it settled on the same airfield. I led the formation on to the target area. We accomplished the mission and returned to the home base at approximately 1245."
