More information

Statement from 1st Lt Jack H. Hallett:
"On 24 April 1945, while on a close support mission working with the controller 'Summer Frock', we were told to go to Kelheim and bomb the town. I was leading the mission and my wingman and I had napalm bombs and number three and four, five hundred pound RDX bombs. I sent Red three and four in first to dive-bomb and as Red four, Lt Havener, pulled up off the target he was hit by 40 mm flak. A burst of white smoke came from the airplane, and it rolled over on its back and went into the ground in a gentle dive, where it exploded. No parachute was seen to open. It is my belief that Lt Havener did not get out, but was killed instantly. We were over the target area at approximately 1150, and Lt Havener went in at approximately 11:55."
