More information

Sgt Julius Zedick attended high school for four years and was a clerk before he joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 11 July 1942.
S/Sgt Aaron Hiller:
"On 7 October 1944, our group was on a mission to bomb the target at Vienna/Winterhaven oil depot, Austria. I was flying as left waist gunner in ship number 488 in the number four position of the first box of the second attack unit. Major Murray was flying ship number 41-28859 in the lead position of the second attack unit. Over the target there was intense and accurate flak. Three minutes before bombs away, Major Murray’s aircraft received a direct hit. He feathered his number three engine, the number two engine was smoking and the aircraft began to lose altitude fast. He then salved his bombs. I saw one man bail out of the top hatch and his chute opened. Immediately afterwards, a second man came out of the top hatch but I failed to see his parachute open. These two crew members were the only ones I saw leave the aircraft. When I last saw Major Murray’s aircraft, the ship was under control but was losing altitude fast. The time was 1302 and the coordinates were 48.11N 16.28E."
Capt Donald P. Bloom:
"I think he was killed by flak while in his compartment."
