More information

Sgt Robert W. Wood graduated from Tenafly High School before he joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in New York City, New York on 10 September 1943. He received gunnery trainnig at Tyndall Field, Florida and flying instruction at Westover Field, Massachusetts. During this training he was in a plane crash in which he was one of three that survived and only suffered minor injuries.

S/Sgt Aaron Hiller:
"Over the target there was intense and accurate flak. Three minutes before bombs away, Major Murray's aircraft, #41-28859, received a direct hit. He feathered his number three engine, the number two engine was smoking and the aircraft began to lose altitude fast. He then salved his bombs. I saw one man bail out of the top hatch and his chute opened. Immediately afterwards, a second man came out of the top hatch but I failed to see his parachute open. These two crew members were the only ones I saw leave the aircraft. When I last saw Major Murray's aircraft, the ship was under control but was losing altitude fast. The time was 1302 and the coordinates were 48.11N 16.28E."

Capt Donald P. Bloom:
"Sgt Wood was found in the wreck of our ship."
