Albert Scanland first served as a private in the U.S. Army Reserve from July 1942 to April 1943. He was assigned to the Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. In September 1943 he was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal to accepted a commission as second lieutenant.
