T/5 Donald A. Phelps enlisted in Kalamazoo, Michigan on 20 January 1943.

He was part of a wounded prisoner exchange, but he sadly died of his injuries.

In all, six brothers of the family went off to war, but only three came home.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Villeneuve-sur-Auvers, France.

He is remembered at the Draper Cemetery in Rives Junction, Jackson County, Michigan.

His brother, Marshall F. Phelps, is buried next to him and his brother, Gene R. Phelps, is buried at the North Africa American Cemetery in Tunisia.
