Sgt Leelon D. Whitehead attended Jackson High School for four years and worked for the Michner Plating Company before he enlisted in Kalamazoo, Michigan on 20 January 1943. He was sent overseas in April 1944.

He was killed by small arms fire in the stomach.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Champigneul, France.
