More information

Pfc Fred W. Ashley was employed at the Boise Payette Lumber Company before he enlisted in Boise, Idaho on 16 January 1943.

On 4 May 1945, Pfc Fred Ashley was reported missing in action while on a reconnaissance mission in former Czechoslovakia. He was mortally wounded. The last time any American saw him, German troops were taking him away.

Shortly after the war, Ashley's family received a letter saying local civilians had discovered Ashley's grave site in Czechoslovakia. An examination, done years later, showed those remains were of F/O Richard Lane. The military was under the impression that Lane was buried in Nebraska with full Military Honors. After analysis was completed, it was found out that Ashley's remains were indeed found. He was laid to rest with full military honors on 20 October 2018 at the Riverside Cemetery in Emmett, Idaho.
