1st Lt Charles R. Abrams Jr.:
At 1130 hours, 12,500 feet, just before the I. P. A/C No. 42-29778 from this group, received a head on attack from an FW-190 and No. 3 engine caught fire. A/C left formation under control, and later all four engines began to burn. A/C was seen to hit the ground. As many as 9 chutes were reported.

2nd Lt William H. Turcotte:
I believe the ship must have gone out of control before he had time to bail out.
