More information
S/Sgt Charles E. Beebe was a pattern and model maker before he volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in San Bernardino, California on 29 October 1942.2nd Lt Rayolyn W. Schroeder:
We were at about 26,000 feet altitude. Aircraft B-17G, 43-38348, was flying lead of high squadron of the low group. We were flying on his right wing. As we were flying from the I.P. to the target and at about 2 minutes prior to the target subject aircraft received a direct hit by flak between No. 3 engine and No. 3 fuel tank. Fire started immediately and the aircraft flew approximately 10 to 15 seconds when the right wing exploded and the aircraft fell into a flat, rather tight spin. We were able to observe this aircraft for only a short way down. No parachutes were seen to come from this aircraft.
He didn't have time to bail out of the plane due to the explosion.
He is remembered at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Point Arena, Mendocino, California.
