1st Lt James W. Brown enlisted in the Air Corps at Kirtland Field in Alberque, New Mexico.He attended elementary school for 8 years at Bernalillo, 4 years at the Albuquerque High School and 8 months at the University of New Mexico. He was a mechanic before his enlistment. Lt Brown trained at SAACE Sanford, Texas, Perring-Ellington Field in Texas, Chatham Field in Georgia, Leberal AA Field in Kansas and Westover Field in Massachusetts. He went overseas on 20 October 1944.

Howard S Aircraft 749 had number 3 engine on fire, feathered number 4 engine and then feathered number 3. Aircraft exploded when it hit the ground at 1322 hours at approximately 5144N-0640E.
