Malvern W. Hetherington attended Radford High School and worked in a textile factory.

He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of th United States in Richmond, Virginia on 6 January 1942.

Four B-17s of the squadron took part in a night raid with the RAF. This aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters and shot down. Three crew members survived and were taken prisoner, seven men were killed.
