More information

S/Sgt Edward Amory's last name was also spelled as Amary. His mother was born in Syria.

He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, where he was a backstroke swimming champion in 1930.

He worked as a motor vehicle mechanic before he enlisted at Camp Upton, New York on 19 March 1942. After being selected to serve with the Air Corps, he was first assigned to a ground crew. He begged to be allowed to fly and trained to become an engineer and waist gunner.

The airplane was attacked by enemy fighters, causing the #3 engine to start burning. The pilot made a dive, probably to extinguish the fire, but after leveling off, it blew up in mid-air.

This B-17 had a crew of eleven men because there was an observer on board. Nine crew members were killed, and two men were taken prisoner.

The crew was on its seventh mission.
