1st Lt John L. White graduated from Ellet High School and attended Kent State University. In high school, as well as at the university he starred in athletics.

He enlisted in 6 March 1941 and received his basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas. At Fort Benning, Georgia he played basketball and won the trophy for being high point man. He also was holder of the one-mile mountain climbing record at Camp Taccoa. He was sent overseas in January 1944.

He was wounded during the invasion in Normandy.

He was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Son, The Netherlands.

His brother Donald also served in a parachute infantry unit and was also wounded in Normandy. He was still in hospital at the time of John's death.
