Pvt Charles W. Burtis was a shoe salesman at the Melville Shoe Corporation before he enlisted at Camp Upton, New York on 15 July 1941.He was taken prisoner and died of wounds in Germany. Whether he died in a POW camp or in a hospital is not known.
