More information
Captain Claude D. Wallace Jr. enlisted upon graduating from the University of Alabama in 1942 and had been overseas eleven months before he was killed. When darkness fell, Wardin was attacked by German tanks. The house, where the command post of I Company was situated, was hit by a granate. Capt Wallace decided that it was better to evacuate and ordered everybody to move to safety. He tried to reach the borders of a little stream when he was hit by small arms fire.
