Marshall Hughes graduated from Groton High School and attended Harvard University for one year.He joined the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, on 27 February 1945 and attended Officer Candidate School at Camp Davis.
He was killed just eleven days after he joined his unit.
All his brothers also served during the war. His father was a prominent Washington DC lawyer. In 1952, he married a German countess, Beatrice Louise-Marie, Countess von Rex.
