Maj Robert M. Blackburn graduated from Drake University.

He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States as an aviation cadet at Fort De Moines, Iowa on 16 January 1942. He was sent overseas in December 1944.

After bombing and strafing an airfield east of Dortmund, Robert Blackburn strafed two Junkers 88 airplanes which were parked on the airfield and blew them up. Maj Blackburn continued on through or over the resulting blast. After climbing, he jettisoned his canopy and transmitted he would bail out. Maj Blackburn was out of sight and stopped transmitting. Nobody saw his plane or parachute.
